Disillusioned Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is hired by the young Emperor of Japan to train their first modern conscript army. In order to ensure a more Westernized approach, there is one barrier they must remove first - the Samurai, an ancient line of warriors, who have dedicated their lives to serving emperor and country. Algren is subsequently captured by the Samurai and is forced to settle in their village. Gradually he finds himself becoming increasingly impressed by their courage and code of honour and he is reminded of his old self before the end of the Civil War.
